Step 1) Like any job, you need to start small and build your portfolio. Add followers, likes, etc... until you reach 50,000 followers. Either you set up a third party platform who handles payment processing (such as WooCommerce or Shopify), or you open a webstore on your own site. I recommend setting up a webstore. It gives you complete control over your pricing, inventory, and customer service. The downside is that you'll need to invest time upfront to create a professional-looking website. But, once your website is live, you can easily add new products and increase sales.
Step 3) Now that you've reached 300,000 followers on Instagram, you can now monetize your account. Click on the Settings button located at the top of the page. Here, click on 'Advertising.' Under the section called 'Monetization,' you have options for three different types of ads: Sponsored Ads, Promoted Posts, and Instagram Shopping Products.
Sponsored Advertisements - These advertisements appear alongside content in stories and feeds. People can click on them to get redirected to websites. These cost $100-$300 per day. Instagram currently offers four sponsored campaigns: Fashion, Food & Drink; Travel & Places; Entertainment; and Health & Fitness.
Promoted Post/s - These show up in the Explore tab and are targeted towards specific hashtags. Since they don't require a link, they don't cost much. However, they only last for 24 hours, after which they disappear. Instagram currently offers five promoted posts/hashtags: Beauty, Music, News, Pets, and Sport.
Instagram Shopping Product/s - These show on the home page and are designed to drive traffic to websites. They are paid and last up to 30 days. You'll need to apply to be approved before using these ads. If you're approved, you'll pay $50-$200 per day. Currently, Instagram offers four shopping products: Fashion, Home & Living, Food & Drink, and Travel & Places.
The final step is to select the type of ad you'd like to run. Instagram uses algorithms to determine what kind of posts you'll receive based on your engagement level (likes, comments, follows, etc...) You can choose between Sponsored Ads, Promotions, or Shopping Products.
Step 4) Finally, select a budget and confirm it. You can edit your budget each month, but remember that ads remain active for 30 days. After that, they expire and no longer generate revenue.
